How to battle negativity on Twitter

November 15th, 2009, 11:55 am by Jon Lansner

ssbestbits3Puzzled by Twitter’s deep and instantaneous pool of information? sOCial sunday asked PR person Rochelle Veturis (@rochelleveturis) of LPA architects in Irvine to ponder Twitter!

I’ve seen good articles recently on how to deal with negative tweeps on Twitter, or on any social platform. One of my favorites, is “Don’t feed the Trolls” by Scott Stratten (@unmarketing).

The truth is, you’re going to deal with negative, unhappy or hurting people every day of your life. You have no control over it. What you do have control of is your response. A few things to think about, when extended negativity happens …

  1. Do you need to expose your following to this person?
  2. Something you said struck a nerve. This is actually a good thing, because it means you’re making a difference
  3. Listening goes a long way. If appropriate, ask them to tell you their story. There’s a reason they reached out to you. Remember that.

Shared a kind word on Twitter recently?

November 8th, 2009, 11:34 am by Jon Lansner

ssbestbits3Puzzled by Twitter’s deep and instantaneous pool of information? sOCial sunday asked PR person Rochelle Veturis (@rochelleveturis) of LPA architects in Irvine to ponder Twitter! As I reflect on the events of the past week, I am once again amazed at the depth and kindness exemplified by my tribe (i.e. band of twitter followers). These dear people, whom I never would have met had it not been for Twitter, have flooded life with warmth, humor, support, creativity, and friendship. They have given me the opportunity to serve them in a way that has tested me as a professional, and grown my character.

As you delve deeper into the social platform you use most often, may I encourage you to begin looking for those personal growth opportunities. Be aware of occasions when you can listen, meet the needs of others, or simply share kind word. Just when you think you’ve experienced all that Twitter has to offer, you’ll find there’s even more. So go on, dive in.

ssbestbits3Puzzled by Twitter’s deep and instantaneous pool of information? sOCial sunday asked PR person Rochelle Veturis (@rochelleveturis) of LPA architects in Irvine to ponder Twitter!

With the addition of Twitter Lists this week, it made me think about some of the other tools people use to make their Twitter experience more organized and enjoyable. A few of the tools in mine include HootSuite, TwitterGrader, TwitPic, and AllTop … although there are many, many more.

So what’s in your toolbox? Share them in the comments below.

Did you miss these 10 cannot-miss Twitter tales?

October 25th, 2009, 11:00 am by Jon Lansner

ssbestbits3Puzzled by Twitter’s deep and instantaneous pool of information? sOCial sunday asked PR person Rochelle Veturis (@rochelleveturis) of LPA architects in Irvine to ponder Twitter!

The 80/20 rule –we’ve all heard it. Where 80 percent of your results come from 20 percent of your efforts. It’s a simple formula, yet many find it hard to weed out the time wasters and focus solely on tasks which yield results. With Twitter especially, the results can be varied. Examples include, building and caring for new relationships, listening, gathering market research, engaging in conversations, following members of the media or news as it happens, or growing your influence with followers who adore you.

I love this saying, “Dig the well before you’re thirsty.” It’s the same with Twitter and the other social platforms. Field of Dreams style, build it and they will come. Set specific intentions, and you’ll accomplish them. Be mindful of what you’re doing and where you’re spending your time. When it’s no longer fun, take a break, turn the computer off and get out and enjoy life.

Does pessimism dominate social media?

October 11th, 2009, 11:30 am by Jon Lansner

ssbestbits3Puzzled by Twitter? sOCial sunday asked PR person Rochelle Veturis (@rochelleveturis) of LPA architects in Irvine to ponder Twitter!

Self-sabotage on social media, I see it all the time. When are folks going to get past the confusion, negative self-talk and overall pessimism? It’s time to move forward. It’s time to free up space in your life so that you can be more creative, and produce better results.

Try an experiment this week: deliberately choose to work on the tasks that will yield the most outrageous results. Break free from your routine. In every tweet, Facebook post, YouTube video or LinkedIn update be energized. Be that person that others enjoy following. Be that person who’s interesting. Be that person who is you.

Tweeple gain acceptance as press

September 27th, 2009, 9:00 am by Jon Lansner

ssbestbits3Puzzled by Twitter’s deep and instantaneous pool of information? sOCial sunday asked PR person Rochelle Veturis (@rochelleveturis) of LPA architects in Irvine to ponder Twitter!

Social media counts. Within the last six weeks, I’ve seen prestigious organizations among the likes of The Irvine Spectrum Center, HomeAid Orange County, Bravo TV, and Saddleback Church, include social media users on their press lists. As the art of live Tweeting becomes more prevalent, here are a few suggestions for success:

  • First, practice makes perfect. It’s not easy juggling tweets, twitpics, audio boos, and video. Practice is the easiest way to improve. Next time you’re at a seminar, fundraiser, fashion show, launch party, or luncheon, make an effort to post during the occasion.
  • Second, be ready to engage. As tweeps pick up on and retweet your tweets, validate their participation with a reply or a simple thanks for the retweet.
  • And lastly, don’t judge your success by the amount of retweets you inspire. Regardless of retweetabiity, use your twinfluence for good.

10 tweets you have to read

September 20th, 2009, 12:00 pm by Jon Lansner

ssbestbits3Puzzled by Twitter’s deep pool of information? sOCial sunday asked PR person Rochelle Veturis (@rochelleveturis) of LPA architects in Irvine to ponder Twitter!

Orange County has really become a hot bed of social media growth and activity. This week alone, there was a Twestival, Social Media for Good gathering, and Gov 2.0 workshop. Both the public and private sectors are jumping on board the online collaboration band wagon. The thread that ties these groups together is their desire for results. Never forget that it’s always a results game; scrap the outreach that isn’t producing results, and complement what’s working with with ideas that are new, fresh and yes, transparent.
