Facebook may be the salad bar of social networking and sOCial Sunday wants to know how to maximize its potential. We asked the National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA) from Anaheim to to us how they quickly got 10,000 ‘fans’ on its Facebook page.
- Place Facebook logo prominently on your home page, and every page on your website. Cross-promote Facebook page in e-newsletters, e-alerts, brochures and with key leaders.
- Don’t ask fans for anything except for them to share their stories. This creates a “voice” for their community.
- Mix it up: Don’t just post articles. NFA linked to podcasts, YouTube videos, too!
- Be Personal. NFA posted an informal video of its president thanking Facebook fans and posted photos and bio’s of staff members.
- Posts keep communication going: make them new and interesting.
- Answer questions that are directed to your organization.
Lessons Learned?
- Not just knowing WHAT to post, but WHEN and HOW MANY. Fan “reaction” can vary with each frequency. There’s no hard and fast rule on this. NFA made 1 to 3 posts per day, spaced evenly throughout the day.
- Don’t keep reminding your fans to help you get more fans. Pages who do this come across as whiny, needy, ungrateful and, well, annoying.
- Remember: The page really belongs to the fans, not just to your organization.
