Fire’s property damage surpasses $142 million

The crack Register news team gleaned from various local officials these destruction totals for the now-contained Freeway Complex Fire that burned 30,305 acres (MORE HERE!) …

  • Yorba Linda: Damage to homes run $125 million to $135 million. The city had 118 homes destroyed and 53 damaged.
  • Anaheim: Property damage estimated at $17.4 million as 8 single-family homes and 48 apartments were destroyed; 13 houses and 48 apartments damaged.
  • Brea: 3 homes lost; another damaged. No dollar estimate available.
  • That adds up to 292 homes destroyed or damages with dollar losses running at least $142 million.

    Make that 73 million, real estate is only worth half of what it was a year ago.

    So does the insurance company actually pay for the rebuild or do they just cut a check based on the current replacement value of the house?

    If the latter, what happens to those owners that owe more than their house is worth? Do they have to make up the difference?
