Apartments.com’s latest tenant survey says renters — even those who don’t smoke — aren’t that crazy about smoking bans.
Of those surveyed, 44.7% opposed the idea of making smoking in apartments illegal while 39.1% supported a ban. Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed — 61.9% — were non-smokers.
About a third of the respondents — 31.8% — said a property management company shouldn’t decide that you can’t smoke in the privacy of your own apartment. Another 22.2% didn’t mind people smoking in their own place as long as it didn’t affect them. (CLICK HERE to see the survey.)
The survey comes as more cities are considering bans on smoking in apartments. Calabasas was the most recent one in California. In January, the Calabasas City Council expanded its ban on smoking in apartment common areas to require landlords to set up outdoor areas for smokers. Belmont in the Bay Area also passed a ban.
Other apartment news:

As long as smokers are willing to accept responsibility for their actions then it is OK with me if they smoke in apartments. They need to pay to have the unit defumigated, and they need to pay for their own health problems, and finally they need to pay to have people around them moved to another unit.
“Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed — 61.9% — were non-smokers.”
Do 40% of people smoke? Say it’s not so!
I hate smoking!
Now that I’ve said that, on to a more important issue. The Cost of Oil!
The Fed has screwed us with their foolish attempt to protect WS high rollers, housing flippers, and home debtors.
I just saw the cost of oil at $131.50 a barrel. Yet the guberment keeps telling us there ain’t no inflation. They no longer have any credibility.
The solution is very simple … RATES MUST INCREASE NOW!
I vote for banning radios which play Air America in apartments. It is much more irritating and does more damage to society.
Enough with the war on smoking! I don’t smoke, but the PC lawmakers wasting time on ordinances banning smoking outdoors (!!!), or inside peoples homes is really stupid. Hey city counsels of the world, how about you take on something that matters, like not allowing strip malls on every corner, or providing more park area, or improving traffic patterns. But nooooooooo, you just pick the easiest target and act like you’re doing something!! Geez Louize.
But, But, But … is smoking not an intrusion of my space if I have to walk by a heard of young, and dumb, nicotine addicts in order to buy my kid a hot chocolate at Starbucks?
Enough of this … smoking impacts everyone, including nonsmokers, who deal with the smell, as well as the unrealized financial cost, in the medical system. If you have medical insurance from your employer or a private plan, you’re subsidizing smokers. The same thing goes for people that are overweight.
smokers and fatties should be sent to camps……. they are a drain on society just like the foolish home debtors………… send them all to the camps……at the camps they can been trained to fight our war on terror……. and sent off to defend america………. i will watch, support, and pray for them like a good american when i watch the news at the gym
Within the general population of Californians, smokers represent 19.2%. Only Utah (14.2%) and Minnesota (18.9%) have fewer. The highest percentage is in Kentucky (30.8%), followed by (surprise, surprise) Nevada (30.4%). Funny, I can barely think of any among my friends and family who do.
Yes, there should be a ban. When someone smokes, even in their own apartment, it affects the health of anyone and everyone nearby (via second-hand smoke through open windows, etc.). Why should smokers have that right?
VOR,
smokers, morbidly obese, and foolish home debtors cost society a ton of money
that is not zero effect
mav,
the drain on society of smokers, obese and bad debtors probably doesn’t come close to the cost of welfare fraud, medicare and insurance claim fraud, military cost overruns, and political freebies in any given 5 year period, with the possible exception of the last couple because of the mortgage crises. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be close.
Banks made far more money in home loans than they lost. Which is exactly why they will get back to lending sooner THAN later.
banks aren’t finished losing
and last time I checked, the major banks of the US have seen MASSIVE equity losses over the past 3 years…….. share holder value went to hell in a hand basket……
and the banks have been laying off mortgage personnel left and right
thoughtful did you know that mortgage lenders have laid off people in the OC?
lee and Mav
I usually like your posts but disagree with you today, I admit that I smoke and overweight. yet I’m in excellent health, dont remember last time I had to go to the doctor. I know people who dont smoke and are in excellent shape who visit the doctor everytime the eyelashes burn :) so what’s the point.
How about alcohol, should it be banned, causes alot more deaths per year than smoking does yet no one complains about it, whats next? red meat(coronary problems)–>number one killer in the USA will be banned from apartments.
It’s kind of scary when everything is controlled what you eat, drink, smoke? this country is way down a slippery slope.
Boy, am I glad I don’t live in Orange County! It’s turning into that city from the Demolition Man movie. Why stop at banning smoking? Let’s see… what else is becoming of popular opinion these days?
1) Vehicles - Exhaust pollution! I would bet that the exhaust pollution is much more relevant and harmful then 2nd hand smoke!
2) Alcohol - Abusive drug that causes violence and idiocracy
3) Violent Video Games - They’re poisoning the mind of our children right?
4) Hamburgers - the smell offends me when you cook it and it’s horribly for your arteries.
5) Driving in high Pedestrian Areas - Someone could get hit!!!
I could go on and on. Come on people where’s your sense?
Have you ever heard that Green Day song American Idiot? It’s popular in The OC right? It’s directly at most of you.
Proud supporter of Smokers-Rights,
Los Angeles, Ca
Have you ever seen a burned out complex, the fire started by a careless smoker’s cigarette? I have. Thats reason enough.
either provide a smoking area in the apartment or stud the ceilings with smoke alarms:) smokers will always find a way even if you ban them.
